January 22nd, 2008

Interview with Lucy Buffett | Interview runs 4:48

Lucy Buffett is known far and wide for “LuLu’s”, the spot for delicious seafood entrees and world-famous cheeseburgers in Gulf Shores - they sell about 100,000 cheeseburgers a year, mind you. Now this famed sister of music legend Jimmy Buffett is cooking up something new these days - another way to support fine arts in Baldwin County Public Schools. In past efforts, this Baldwin Schools’ Partner in Education has contributed more than $25,000 to support art in schools. She’s now looking to take that up a notch with a new book entitled, “Crazy Sista Cooking”. One dollar from the sale of each book goes to the fine arts program in Baldwin County Public Schools. Terry Wilhite took a trip to Gulf Shores recently to find out more about Lucy “LuLu” Buffett, her new book and the magic of her Gulf Coast cuisine.

PLANNING FOR GROWTH

November 16th, 2007

Interview with Dr. Steve Salmon | Runs 5:00

Your family is about to double and they are all coming to your place to live. What do you do? That’s the question Baldwin County officials are asking in light of a county commission projection that shows the population will double in a mere 10 years. The Baldwin County Public School System is taking a progressive approach. Last year, the district became the first in Alabama to deploy sophisticated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tracking that serves as “radar” to help predict growth. This year, the district retained building management expert Dr. Steve Salmon to help school officials maximize current facilities and to ensure expansions make good use of every square foot.
What does that mean for parents of children in Baldwin County Schools? Terry Wilhite asks that question and more during a recent interview.

STAPH INFECTION IN PERSPECTIVE

October 29th, 2007

Interview with Baldwin Schools Nursing Supervisor Martha Holloway| Runs: 5:00

At the end of October, Baldwin Public Schools had nine cases of “Staph” infection. Nine cases out of 27,000 students constitutes about three one-hundreths of one percent of the student population with this illness. However, school health officials say good information in the hands of parents and personal student hygiene are the best ways to prevent staph infection from spreading. Heading the school system’s health efforts is Martha Holloway, a veteran health expert in education who joined Baldwin Schools last spring, having previously served the Alabama State Department of Education. Holloway sheds light on an old bug that is making new news and has piqued the interest of national as well as local media.

BALDWIN COUNTY’S WORLD CONNECTION

October 1st, 2007

Interview with Dr. Mike Spector | Recorded: Summerdale School | Runs: 4:30

It’s been said that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. That’s true, unless you’re talking about connecting Baldwin County students and teachers with their counterparts in Indonesia. In that case “the shortest distance” runs through Florida State University. Joining Terry today is Dr. Mike Spector from Florida State who explains what’s planned in an effort to link the two countries toward the goal of world-class education via Summerdale School, a Kindergarten through 8th grade school located in central Baldwin County.
